Thrift, Consignment, Vintage or Resale: What's the Difference?
“Secondhand store” covers several very different kinds of shops. Knowing which is which helps you set expectations for price, selection and how much digging you will do, and it helps you choose where to sell or donate your own things.
Thrift stores
Thrift stores sell donated goods. Many are run by charities or nonprofits that use the proceeds to fund programs, while others are for-profit businesses that buy donations in bulk. Because donations are not screened for style, selection is broad and unpredictable and prices are usually the lowest of any secondhand option. Expect to dig. The payoff is that genuinely great pieces can be priced like everything else.
Consignment shops
Consignment shops sell items on behalf of their owners and split the sale price with them. Because the shop only earns money when something sells, it curates carefully: items are usually clean, in season and in good condition, and they often lean toward brand names. Prices are higher than thrift, but you spend far less time searching. If you have quality clothing or furniture to part with, consignment is a way to get paid for it.
Vintage stores
Vintage stores specialize in older items, generally at least a couple of decades old. Owners source pieces from estate sales, thrift stores and collectors, then clean, repair and style them. You are paying for that curation and expertise. Vintage shops are the best place to find a specific era or style without searching dozens of racks.
Buy-sell-trade resale stores
Resale stores buy clothing directly from the public, paying cash or store credit up front, then resell it. They focus on current, trend-driven brands, so they feel closer to a regular retail store with lower prices. If you want recent styles in good condition, this is often the most efficient option.
